It is with very great sadness that we report the death of Plymouth Athenaeum Past President, Shirley Paterson.

Shirley, who was a former Trustee and President for 2020/21, was our longest serving member, having joined the Society in 1960.

Honorary Librarian from 1971-85, Shirley was awarded Honorary Life Membership in 2010.

Shirley, who died aged 88, will be missed greatly by all her friends and former colleagues at the Athenaeum and we send our condolences and best wishes to those affected by her death.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of the Plymouth Athenaeum’s long-serving former treasurer, Arthur Norman.

Arthur, who died aged 93, was Honorary Treasurer from 1994 to 2017 and was awarded Honorary Life Membership on his retirement from that position.

He will be greatly missed by all his friends and former colleagues at the Athenaeum and we send our condolences and best wishes to his family.

Arthur’s funeral will be held at Plympton St Maurice Church on Tuesday, 12th April at  10.30am. There will be a reception afterwards at the Rose and Crown, Yealmpton.

Prof Alison Anderson discusses the role of the media in covering the climate crisis.

Alison Anderson is Professor in Sociology in the School of Society and Culture and the research lead for the Environment, Culture and Society research group at the University of Plymouth.

Her research focuses on risk communication particularly in terms of environmental issues and health. She is the author of Media, Culture and the Environment and Media, Environment and the Network Society as well as numerous articles on media and risk communication.

She is also an Adjunct Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University, Australia and a founding member of the International Environmental Communication Association.

Join us as Louis Dyson discusses his research into the six custodians of the Cottonian Collection of oils, works on paper, sculpture and books which were collected primarily during the mid-late 18th century on Thursday, 7^th April (7.30pm) a City College Plymouth.

The Cottonian Collection was donated to the Plymouth Proprietary Library in 1853 and transferred to the then Plymouth City Museum, now known as The Box, in 1915.

Louis, who has been working for the The Box, is an Art History graduate from the University of Plymouth and was awarded the 2021 Maureen Attrill Bursary. He will be completing a report on the project which will be published online for The Box’s 2022 programme.

His research includes Charles Rogers (1711-1784), who collected the bulk of the collection, mostly drawings and prints, and the last custodian William Cotton III of Ivybridge (1794-1863).

Plymouth’s Chris Savery takes us on a personal journey as a playwright that had led to his work being performed on stage in New York and Paris.

His work includes Mirror, Mirror: The Other Side of Marilyn and To Win a Crown of Thorns, a play about the English Civil War.

Chris has a Masters in Creative Writing and is currently in the final year of his PhD at the University of Plymouth.
