Join us as Dr Hannah Theaker discusses ‘Terror and the state in contemporary China: Understanding Xi Jinping’s campaigns against Muslims’ on Thursday, 4th November (7.30pm).
China has been accused in the media, and by organisations including Amnesty International, of committing crimes against humanity, and possibly genocide, against its Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups in the north-western region of Xinjiang.
Dr Hannah Theaker is Lecturer in History and Politics at the University of Plymouth and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford China Centre.
Her research has explored religion, ethnicity and migration in imperial China. Her book project, China’s Forgotten Partition, explores the social transformations which occurred in the wake of the 19th century Great Northwestern Rebellion.
The talk is the opening lecture of our Autumn 2021 series and the first in a new partnership with City College Plymouth.
