Back in time for The Plymouth Athenaeum President’s Address

We are going back in time on Thursday, 3rd of October (7.30pm) for our President’s Address.

Our Lecture Hall is going to be set up in 19th Century ‘Parliamentary’ style as part of this year’s ongoing celebration of the 200th anniversary of the opening of the original Athenaeum building.

The Lecture Room will be set out to recreate the look of the original hall, as shown in these images.

The John Foulston-designed original Athenaeum, which opened in February 1819, was destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz of 1941.

The rebuilt Athenaeum, designed by Walls & Pearn, opened in June 1961.

The Address – The Presidents of The Plymouth Athenaeum since 1812 –will given by David Ryles, who was recently re-elected to the position.
